About Us

Our Mission

To advocate on behalf of Black women and girls to promote leadership development and gender equity in the areas of health, education and economic empowerment.

The Sacramento Chapter of the National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Inc. was chartered in 2001 and is one of 64 NCBW chapters in 25 states in the United States and Washington, D.C., and one of seven in California. The National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Inc. was founded in New York City in 1981 to address systemic discrimination and root causes of opportunity inequity for African Americans created in the wake of the turbulent 1960’s.

Inspired by the National Coalition, lifelong civil rights activist Rosemary Jones-Melvin worked with friends and colleagues to charter NCBW Sacramento with 31 members and Ms. Rosemary as its first president. Our organization’s charter members were professional women with a shared commitment to promoting gender and racial equity and socio-political advancement for Black women and girls in the Sacramento region.

Since its inception, our Sacramento Chapter has provided more than 100 scholarships to young women to attend college. We have mentored several hundred young women through our Fostering Hope Program, kept 40 – 50 girls engaged through our summer reading program over each of the past 5 years, and helped college-bound students reach their goals through our college preparation and entrance exam preparation programs.

In November 2021, Sacramento NCBW proudly celebrates 20 years of effective leadership, mentorship, inspiration, and assistance to young women and girls who are growing into effective and influential members of our communities, the nation, and beyond.
